It wasn't just red and white everywhere on Canada Day at Splash Island yesterday. Yellow was a large factor as the local Big Brothers Big Sisters saw over 1,600 yellow rubber ducks race toward the finish line to help its fund mentorship programs in its Big Duck Race.

Executive director Dawn Froese says the names are not yet compiled.

First Prize - 69"We know the numbers who won," notes Froese. "Thursday we'll be giving them a call. Number 69 came in first, second 1,667 and third place was 1,021. So, if you have those numbers, expect a call from us."

She says money raised came to about $5,800, and, with over 1,600 ducks, it will take some time to determine whose names belong to the winning numbers. Froese says this kind of support means so much to them, seeing as the community is clearly behind the effort.

Froese describes what it's like to watch the ducks in action.

"Because it follows the Splash Island currents, shall we say, it's not the fastest moving race there is," she continues. "But we send them down the waterslide, which is just very cool to see 1,600 ducks coming out of the chute at the bottom of the waterslide."

Second place - 1,667She says she watched from the finish line and considered how long it was taking, when suddenly a massive yellow crowd of the ducks made their way around the last corner. Froese adds it's always a fun event to experience.

First place included two paddle boards from Canadian Tire and a Central Plains RedcPlex membership in Southport for a year. Second prize was a five cubic foot freezer from JS Furniture, with a $500 gift card from Homestead Co-op. Third prize was a 49 inch TV.

Froese explains Homestead Co-op made this all possible as their main sponsor, and all funds raised goes toward mentoring. She thanks all who came out and watched and supported Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Third place - 1,021
