A woman who grew up in Portage la Prairie is running this week for all the children who could not run away from situations that led to missing and murdered Indigenous children as well as women. She's calling it Reclaiming Our Strength.

Larissa Bear knows many people who've lost a loved one in the tragic rash of those missing and or murdered from residential schools, Camp Morgan, as well as the residential school here in Portage.

She's walking from Portage to The Forks in Winnipeg to raise awareness about the issue and started at the east of the city on Monday afternoon.

"I just want to help. I'm Just a little vessel in this whole thing. It's all about everyone here, and just inspiring the youth and reclaiming, our strength," says Bear.

The reason she chose her journey to end at The Forks is due to Winnipeg's renown as one of the capitals of murdered and missing Indigenous women.

"It's a lot that I'm feeling; just the pain from the ones who came before me. It's a lot. I'm running just one step at a time. The whole round, I'm just going to be thinking about all the kids and all the girls; the kids who couldn't run away. I'll just be thinking of them the entire time."

Bear thanks all those who've helped her make it a reality after the effort's been on her mind for quite some time.
