A wet and cloudy June could be warming up in the coming days.

As of 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, 69mm of precipitation has been recorded in the Portage la Prairie area this month.

Justin Shelley, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, says that the amount is close to the average total expected for June, 80mm.

"The weekend might bring us to our June average, and then it will be up to the last week of June to determine where we fall, whether we finish a bit closer to normal or we might get a little bit above normal, should we see another pattern emerge where we have a bit more unsettled conditions."

If you add precipitation from 12:01 a.m. onwards during the early hours of Tuesday's rainfall, Portage will undoubtedly be closer to that 80 mm mark. However, Shelley says that data was unavailable to Environment and Climate Change Canada on Tuesday afternoon.

After Tuesday night, Shelley says there will be isolated showers and thunderstorms, possibly in neighbouring regions to the west and north.

"There is a slight risk of one of those systems possibly moving into the Portage region at some point later this week, but the probability at this point is low."

Looking at the rest of the week, Shelley notes that we will see some periodic rain further down the line, but generally speaking, he expects more sun for the next couple of days starting Wednesday.

"As the week goes on, we're going to sort of move out of the unsettled and wet pattern the area has been in for the last several days and into a warmer and drier pattern for the rest of the week," he continues. "Wednesday, we're going to see a bit of a shift in the overall pattern."
