The first case of West Nile virus this year in Southern Health-Sante Sud RHA was reported last week.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Shelley Buchan says the woman contracted the mild, or non-neurological form.

Buchan notes the woman became infected near the end of July.

"And that was really the period of time when our most risk was occurring within the province as far as transmission of illness. So we did just see the one case, and now with the cooler weather, and the mosquities going into a different phase, we wouldn't be expecting really any additional cases, or very few, if any."

Buchan notes we're near the end of the West Nile season, but you should still take precautions.

"Earlier in August, when people could be exposed, they could be starting to have symptoms now. But as far as risk today of people being exposed, the risk is very much at the tail end of the season, just because of the weather that we have right now."

She adds if you experience symptoms like severe headaches, a rash, or muscle aches, check with your physician.
