A quick start and strong second period lifted the Portage Terriers over the Waywayseecappo Wolverines 5-4 Tuesday night. The power play was hot for both teams with five of the nine goals coming with a man advantage.

Portage looked great out of the gate picking up multiple chances and eventually the first goal. Logan Christensen finished off a two on one with Riley Bruce. Penalty trouble plagued the Terriers for the back half of the period. With Shindle about to come out of the box Matthew Kasowski blasted a shot top shelf. The Wolverines started to get some momentum. Three minutes later Conrad Phillips fired one off the post and in past Nathan Moore. Jack Kennedy then added another for Waywayseecappo in the final minute to go up 3-1 heading to the dressing room.

Despite being down a pair of goals Portage came out in the second period just like they did to start the first. The hard work paid off quickly. Peyton Gorski was rewarded with a deflection off of a Wolverine’s stick past a sliding Thomson Phinney. Lane Taylor tied the game late in the second with a shot from the right circle. With less than two minutes to go Portage regained their lead when Joey Moffatt got a loose puck close to the net and snapped it past Phinney.

The Terriers picked up in the third where they left off. Riley Bruce fired home his team leading 16th goal of the season from the mid slot. With a two goal lead Portage tried to not let off the gas, but with Shindle in the box Waywayseecappo scored again. Despite pulling their goalie in the late stages of the game the Wolverines were unable to tie it at five.

Tuesday night was the debut for Terrier newcomers Bryson Cecconi and Chase Felguieras. They were acquired last week from the Humboldt Broncos for future considerations. They started off slowly but began to look more comfortable as the game progressed. They both can skate well and an offensive touch appears to be present.

Portage has now won three straight and are tied with Winkler for second in the standings. They are back in action on Friday hosting the OCN Blizzard. The annual Teddy Bear Toss will be held that night. Fans are encouraged to bring a new stuffed animal for the Salvation Army’s Christmas hampers. When the Terriers score their first goal of the night throw your bears on the ice. Puck drop is set for 7:30 pm.
