February was a funny month, when looking at the weather in Portage la Prairie.

That's from local weather specialist Henry Romance, who recorded temperatures, wind chills and precipitation amounts for the entire month.

He says if it felt like this year's February was warmer than last year, you're right.

"The average high for the first-half of February was minus 7 degrees," says Romance. "That was actually eleven degrees milder than last year. On the same token, the daily average low was minus 19. It was warmer than last year, which was a balmy minus 25.8 degrees Celsius."

It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows, as we did have some extreme cold warnings put into affect by Environment and Climate Change Canada.

"The mildest day was plus 4 degrees, on the 1st of the month," says Romance. "The coldest days were the 7th and the 12th where the temperature dipped to minus 30 within 6 to 8 o'clock in the morning."

On the 7th, the wind chill was minus 37. On the 12th, we hit minus 46.

When it comes to precipitation, we didn't see much. Romance says the snow depth remained the same as it was in January.

"I only recorded 4 centimetres of snowfall, thus far, this month," says Romance. "Plus, we had 0.3 millimetres of freezing rain on the second of this month here, which made the roads quite treacherous. I am measuring right about 25 centimetres of snow depth on the ground right now."

Of the first fifteen days, frost was reported on eight of those days. The 7th and the 11th were the only two days with what he'd describe as "heavy frost".
