École Arthur Meighen School is proud of its two students who were part of the winning team in the U13 Provincial Club Volleyball championships last weekend.

It took place at the Dakota Community Centre in Winnipeg. Renee Moar and Camryn Lavallee each brought home medals as a result.

Portage la Prairie currently has no Club Volleyball in the area, so both students who wanted to be involved went to the University of Manitoba (U of M), tried out for the Junior Bisons program, and ended up making the Gold Team.

It was no small feat to attend practices together, seeing as they had to drive three or four times a week into Winnipeg, including tournaments besides that. Representatives of the school note the girls not only represented École Arthur Meighen School but Portage la Prairie, as they were the only Portage students in the championships. To win a provincial event is no small thing, especially when you consider the commitment to travel, alone.

Renee Moar says their friend and teammate, Lexi, made secured the win with a serve, and notes it was a great way to end the game.

"Mr. Crevier was the one who inspired both of us to try out," says Moar. "There are over 100 girls at the tryout and we made the team. I think we all worked as a team. We played really good in the semi-finals and the finals, and we really worked hard not to let one ball drop. I think that's what made us win."

Grade 7 student Camryn Lavallee says her teacher from last year had a daughter who plays on the U of M Women's Volleyball team, and it inspired her to get involved over the summer.

"You just sign-up online and then I went to the tryouts in December," says Lavallee.

She notes the winning team members each received a medal in honour of their championship.
