The Santa Clara Baseball League (SCBL) regular season is almost behind us, and the Portage Padres can end on top with a strong finish.

Team manager Andrew Moar says if the team can win its two home games this week, it will lock up the top spot in the SCBL. The team will host the Austin A's on July 9 and the Carberry Royals on July 10. Both games will start at 7 p.m.

When the year was just getting started, Moar believed the season could've gone either way.

"We're definitely happy with the way the season's been," explains Moar. "It was a little unknown going into the season with a bunch of new guys, but it's been a great year, and we're excited to finish it off strong."

Portage will need to exercise their demons from earlier in the season, as two of their three losses came from the A's and Royals.

The Padres currently hold the top spot in the SCBL standings. However, the Neepawa Cubs and Plumas Pirates are still within striking distance to potentially steal the regular season pennant. This would require the Padres to lose at least two of their three final games, meaning that Portage controls their destiny at this point.

"Hopefully, we get some good crowds out for the next couple of games and playoffs and send the fans home happy."

After their home games, the Padres will travel to Plumas to battle the Pirates, marking the end of their 2024 regular season campaign. The team that finishes first in the SCBL standings will continue their season with a provincial-level tournament, as well as having top seed for playoffs.
