As the days grow warmer, and spring cleaning is underway, it's no wonder why Coats for Kids is hosting an early collection period.

Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Plains, Dawn Froese, gives us the rundown.

"We are doing something new this year for Coats for Kids. We are doing a collection from May 1 to the 31. We've never done that before because of a whole bunch of reasons, but we're going to try it this year. So, if you have been cleaning up your winter coats and they don't fit anymore, if they're gently used, you can drop them off through the month of May. You can drop them off at the Family Resource Centre, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the United Way office or the Portage la Prairie Regional Library."

Donated coats and winter items will be cleaned and stored until November, when they'll be distributed to those in need. Froese expressed gratitude for the community's support.

"We're just very thankful for the support for Coats for kids over the years, this community has really banded together, and we have made coats available to a lot of kids and even some adults."

Those who are used to the normal donation period will still be able to give their warm clothes in October.

As we embrace the warmth of spring, let's remember those who still need a little help staying cozy when the cold returns.
