After a successful 2015 season, the Portage Golf Club is ready for 2016, and expects an even better year.

President Preston Meier says it was a very successful year for the club, adding the building of a new maintenance shed is one of the main reasons for the great year.

"The biggest project we had this year is we built a new maintenance shed. It's not something fancy like new sand traps or water traps or improved green facilities, but what it does is it allows us to keep our equipment up. That allows us to lower our maintenance cost at the end of the day, so we're able to take that money and put it back into the course and make some improvements with it."

Meier says last year saw a decrease in memberships, but an increase in green fees purchased, and he thinks the reason for that was the new deck at the clubhouse.

"For the entire year we actually had the new deck that we actually put up in 2014, but last year was the first full year that we had it. We really saw some increased exposure just because of the deck. If anybody hasn't had the chance to get out there and have a look at it you should. You can sit out there and have a drink overlooking the lake...it's probably one of the most beautiful spots in Portage."

Meier says 2016 will focus more on making the course as good as they can for their members.

"We certainly want to appeal to our members first of course because they're the backbone of the club. Secondly, we want to make sure that the course is a desirable place and that it's a destination place where even more people want to come golf. We also have a first time membership fee at dramatically reduced prices for anyone that hasn't been a member in the last 5 years and the other thing we want to focus on is creating more of a club-like atmosphere."

Meier adds with an increase in the number of tournaments and junior golfers last year, he expects 2016 to be one of the most successful seasons ever.
