Environment and Climate Change Canada says strong northwesterly winds are making their way into the southern part of the province today.

According to a special weather statement, gusts of 80 kilometres or more will be possible for the Red River Valley and the Interlake throughout the afternoon. Meteorologist Terri Lang says some areas could see wind warnings as a result.

"Wind gusts as high as 90 kilometres per hour are likely, with some higher gusts across the lakes, as well," says Lang. "Those folks on the eastern shores of the lakes probably will see some higher gusts, also."

High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break. High winds may result in power outages and fallen tree branches.

"When the winds are coming through like this, people should be putting things away that can get airborne," says Lang. "We're talking about patio umbrellas, patio furniture, floaties in your pools, trampolines, things that can go flying around."

Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions due to high winds.
