It was a thriller and not the finish the Trojans wanted. The Morden Thunder are Zone 4 High School Hockey League champions. Acoyen Fehr scored both Morden goals including the winner with 8 minutes left in the game and the Thunder shaded Portage Collegiate 2-1. The Thunder swept the best of three final in two straight which included a win in Portage last week.

Alex Van Deynze had the lone goal for PCI and Rowan Cherkas had a stellar night in goal turning aside 37 of 39 shots. The Trojans were the defending champions and finished the regular season tied for the top spot with Morden. Both squads had identical 20-4 records, but the Trojans had the first seed due to the tie-breaker.

With provincials also in the rearview mirror, this means the Trojans season is officially over with the exception of four players participating in the All-Star game Saturday afternoon in Altona. Alex Van Deynze, JJ Oke, Maddox Shindle and Rowan Cherkas are a part of the team that will take on the Winnipeg High School All-Stars.

It’s Morden’s first Zone 4 championship since the 2016-2017 season.
