The Portage Terriers will be protecting local players F Koy Funk (08) and D Lawson O’Ray (08) ahead of the MJHL entry draft on Sunday, June 2.

Each MJHL team is eligible to select up to two local players from their region to be added to their protected list. The draft will begin at 10 am on Sunday and will be updated live through RinkNet Live Draft Centre technology. See full list of MJHL Auto protected players here.

Koy Funk (08, F, 6’3, 190) – Funk played last season with the RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg U18. He was second on the team in scoring and had 35 points in 30 games. The Portage product represented team MB at the 2023 WHL Cup which won gold. Funk was drafted 77th overall (4th round) by the Calgary Hitmen (WHL).

“Koy Funk is a big and strong left centre. He is full of potential and plays a 200-foot game,” says head scout Angus Moar.  “We think with his size and skill he can step right in this fall if that’s the choice he makes.”

Lawson O’Ray (08, D, 6’1, 194) – O’Ray played for the Central Plains Capitals AAA (U17) last season and had 9 points in 35 games. “He is a bigger strong left defenseman who can play a lot of different ways and be successful when physical,” says Moar. “Lawson could push for a spot this fall but has yet to play U18 so he could be a year or so away.” He also attended Portland Winterhawks camp last fall.
