Last week saw three separate instances of arrests due to impaired driving

The first occurred on May 6 at 1:30 a.m. While officers were responding to a call to an address on 9th Street NW in Portage la Prairie, a vehicle associated to that call was seen on 6th Avenue NE. 

The officer conducted a traffic stop with this vehicle. The 26-year-old driver, a man from Portage, was asked to provide a breath sample on a Roadside Screening Device (RSD). The result was a Fail. The driver was also on an order not to be in contact with a passenger of this vehicle as well, and had an outstanding Warrant of Arrest. 

The driver was placed under arrest and taken to the RCMP Detachment to provide breath samples to be analyzed. The results of those tests were well over double the legal limit. 

The driver is charged with Operation While Impaired Over 80mg%, Impaired Operation of a Conveyance, Driving While Prohibited and Disobeying a Court Order. He has lost his license, and the vehicle he was driving was impounded for a minimum of 60 days. 

He appeared in court later that day.


The following day, May 7, shortly after 11:00 p.m., a Portage RCMP officer conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle on Dufferin Avenue West. The driver was asked to provide a breath sample on a Roadside Screening device and the result was a Fail. 

The 26-year-old man from Portage was issued an Immediate Roadside Driving Prohibition. 

He has lost his license for 90 days, the vehicle he was driving was impounded for a minimum of 30 days, and he must pay an Administration Penalty of $700.00.


On May 8, the third consecutive day, at around 11:10 p.m., a Portage RCMP officer observed a vehicle traveling above than the speed limit, and conducted a traffic stop. 

The officer asked the 26-year-old driver from Winnipeg to provide a breath sample on a RSD. The results were a Fail. 

He was placed under arrest for Impaired Operation of a Vehicle. 

At the RCMP Detachment the driver provided further samples to be analyzed. Those results were double the legal limit. 

The driver faces charges of Operation While Over 80mg%, Impaired Operation of a Vehicle, a speeding ticket, a driving while disqualified ticket and a ticket for carrying liquor in a vehicle. His fines totalled $1338.00. 

The vehicle he was driving was towed and impounded, and he will appear in court at a later date.
