Portage la Prairie RCMP officers were at a residence on an unrelated matter when they came into contact with a man who was known to have a court-imposed curfew. It happened on Friday, February 10th. He lied about his identity, but officers recognized him and advised him to ensure he returned home before his curfew.

The next day at about 12:30 a.m., Portage RCMP attended his residence to ensure he was abiding by his conditions, and he was not home.

Officers on patrol located the man walking on 9th Street NW in Portage la Prairie, and advised him that he was under arrest. He fled on foot but was apprehended safely after a brief foot pursuit.

Police searched the man and found a loaded, sawed-off rifle, ammunition, and a small quantity of methamphetamine.

Jerale Meeches, 24, of Portage la Prairie, has been charged with numerous offences including:

  • Possession of  a Firearm when knowing Possession is Unauthorized
  • Weapons Possession Contrary to Order x2
  • Carrying a Concealed Weapon
  • Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Careless Use of Firearm
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Fail to Comply x4
  • Identity Fraud

He was remanded into custody.
