A wildfire ignited early Monday near the intersection of Road 80 N and 44 W, northwest of Portage la Prairie. Firefighter Todd McKinnon says it's still burning as of 10:00 a.m. after they first received the call at about 1:00 a.m.

"We responded with two units out there. We were able to knock down some of the fire as it was approaching property to the south. Everything to the west is contained. Most of the south is contained, as well, and the north is just running to the lake. We still have a unit out there with a couple of firefighters monitoring the scene for the Fire Commission. It's still spreading slowly against the wind to the east, and probably will continue to do so. We're hoping that it's."

McKinnon adds there are a few bodies of water where the fire is heading and they're hoping that stops it.

"I would probably estimate that there would be approximately 100 acres burned at this point. We have no indication of the cause at this time."

He notes one unit that remains there will continue to monitor things, as the fire is currently at an inaccessible area.

"We just want to make sure that we have eyes on it and and that, hopefully, it spreads to the right direction and enters the body of water and that should be the end of it."
