Strong winds. rain, freezing temperatures, flurries, and wet snow have combined to make travel less than desirable this morning. All highways in the area are quite slippery early today. Fortunately, the mess isn't expected to last long.

The Trans-Canada highway between Portage and Winnipeg is snow-covered in one lane and quite slick in the other for most of the drive. One regular commuter reported it was driveable but not pleasant.

"I had to go 60km/h most of the way but made it to work. The slipperiest area was between Elie and Winnipeg"

East of Winnipeg, the Trans-Canada is closed between the perimeter highway and highway 302 at Richer.

The light snow will end early this morning and the temperature will rise to plus 3 but the wind will hang around for most of the day with gusts from the north as high as 70km/h.

Because of the icy conditions, the Portage school division will not be running any buses today. The city schools will be open for those who can attend but Oakville school, as well as the Hutterian schools, will be closed. Daycare transportation will not be running in Portage today either.
