Organizations and schools from around Portage la Prairie went to the Portage la Prairie Community Revitalization Corporation (PCRC) parking lot last Friday morning to line their pockets with complimentary breakfast pockets, courtesy of McCain Foods.

The giveaway, facilitated by the PCRC, saw 19 organizations and seven schools gifted over 1600 boxes of Breakfast Pockets for their many needs.

Lorna Knight of the PCRC spoke about this giveaway, saying it's great to see, as this is a cause near and dear to her heart.

"We managed to hit up a lot of organizations in town. Food insecurity is a major issue, and if anything can be done, this McCain's donation is going to go a long way to schools and handouts. It's just phenomenal."

Shawn Rawlings, the coordinator for Prairie Welcome House, an outreach program from the Good Shepherd Parish Catholic Church, talked to PortageOnline about how much this means to his group and the community.

"I'm almost 60 years old. I've belonged to a lot of organizations, and I've never seen more of a greater need to help feed people in Portage," continues Rawlings. "Right now, our poverty rate in Portage is 30 per cent of the population, and it's growing. We cannot help but thank McCains greatly for this. People are hungry. People are starving. I see it every day in our outreach program."

Rawlings notes that he hopes more companies in Portage jump on the bandwagon of helping support the community in this way.
