Another local athlete has committed to Assiniboine Community College's (ACC) athletics program.

Rachel Halldorson, a goaltender from Lundar, will be making the move to Brandon to join the Cougars for next season as the program looks to avenge their loss in the ACHA Division 2 Finals this spring.

Halldorson says it's amazing to get the chance to play at the next level.

"I've been ecstatic, honestly. I had a few schools, but ACC suited me the best, and it's still close to home, so I get to still see my family and stuff. It's just been an honour and I'm excited to represent the Cougars, and I think it will be a blast. I know a few of the girls from previous seasons from my league, and I think it will be an easy transition. Then, I can just go out there and have some fun."

Halldorson notes that she's received a lot of help from many people to get to this point in her hockey career.

"There's many coaches and players, and my family obviously. My family has been such a supportive group. They've always pushed me to strive to be my best. They've always been there for me, no matter what. They support me at all my hockey events, they will travel the farthest they can. My family has been a big help with hockey, I don't think I could do it without them. I've had coaches in the past who have believed in me all the way. They've checked up on me no matter what. So, I think some old coaches, the majority of my family, and my team last year, they've really pumped me up and helped me become the best I can be."

The Cougars head coach, Tony Bertone, shared what excited him about signing Rachel to the program.

"I was very happy to sign Rachel. I feel she is a top goalie in U18 AAA, she's very athletic and good size with a high compete level that never gives up on the puck."

She will join the ACC team this fall as they aim for another shot at the ACHA Division 2 championship.
