Elizabeth Rose Bernard (nee Magolnitski)

It is with great sadness that we are announcing the passing of our wife, mother, sister, grandmother “Grammie” and friend, Elizabeth “Liz” Bernard on Friday, July 15, 2022 at the Portage District General Hospital at the age of 62 years, after a short battle with cancer.

Left to mourn are her husband of 44 years Brian; two sons Jamie (Jill) and Matthew (Catherine); grandchildren Duncan and Bridget; sisters Carol (Larry), Kathy, and Darlene (Don); many nieces and nephews Jennifer, Michelle, Crystal, Danielle, Kolton, Kerry, and Justin; as well as other close family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, James and Annie (nee Klyzub), and her mother and father-in-law, Harry and Beth (nee Stewart).

Liz was born in 1960 in Winnipeg but grew up on a farm near Teulon until leaving home to attend school in New Brunswick. It is in New Brunswick where she met the love of her life, marrying Brian in 1978. After initially settling in Nova Scotia, Brian and Liz, with their two young kids in tow, moved to Portage La Prairie in 1995, where they lived until her passing. She worked at the Manitoba Developmental Centre for 25 years making many lasting friendships among her colleagues.

She was a loving mother who could always be seen in the stand of her children’s numerous sporting events. Her love of sports extended to her own life. She was an avid bowler as well as a passionate Jets and Bombers fan, never missing a game by watching either in the stands or on television. Nor did she ever pass up an opportunity to purchase Jets and Bombers paraphernalia for herself or her grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at the McKenzies Funeral Home on Friday, July 22, 2022 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A celebration of Liz’s life will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at 1:30 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. The service will be live streamed to register and view, visit Ellen’s obituary page on our website listed below.
