Calls for service were up in every major category in our region, according to the Manitoba RCMP.

The RCMP has released their monthly Crime Stat report, comparing the number of calls in December 2023 to December 2022. The West District, which includes Portage la Prairie, had a 13 per cent increase in total calls, jumping from 3,546 to 4,000.

Crime against Property calls had the highest increase, rising 37 per cent, from 502 to 689. Crime against Person calls climbed five per cent, going from 320 to 337.

Common Police Activity calls also increased by five per cent, from 493 to 518.

There were no fatal motor vehicle collisions in December 2023, compared to three in December 2022. However, there were three serious motor vehicle collisions, two of which were in December 2022.

For the total number of traffic enforcement tickets issued, which combines all districts, there was a 13 per cent increase, going from 2,194 to 2,477.
