For the first time in three years, Portage la Prairie is having Bike Week in its entirety. There will be several events starting on May 27th and concluding on June 2nd.

Portage Community Revitalization Corporation's Community Engagement Coordinator, Lorna Knight, says after the kickoff there will be at least two activities a day for the rest of Bike Week.

“The activities really range from family friendly, moderate pace bike riders, all the way up to experienced bike riders that want a bit more of a challenge. All the activities are free with the exception of the Grub Crawl and those tickets are on sale right now at the Portage Library.”

The kickoff at Island Park will have a bike rodeo, face painting, bike tune-ups, a free hot dog lunch and a massive bike race that will start at 1 p.m. on the 27th.

If you don’t have a bike, don’t worry, the Family Resource Centre will have some donated bikes on the scene so kids can still participate in the events.

“The bike week is an initiative from the Portage Active Transportation Committee,” Knight notes. “It's a huge committee of individuals with participation from all sorts of different organizations within Portage. Bike Week is a key time to really highlight the transportation trails we have within Portage, as well as, a huge push to just get people out on their bikes and be more active.”
