An often overlooked unit of the RCMP came up big yesterday evening. Portage RCMP responded to a 911 call around 5:30 p.m. yesterday. A witness told the police a man had crashed his vehicle in to a sign near the River Road Co-op and appeared distraught. Portage RCMP Constable Dave Spakowski says the man evaded paramedics and fled the scene on foot, a short time later the RCMP's Bike Patrol found the man walking down the #1 highway overpass. The 50 year old man was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle, he faces charges of refusing to provide a breath sample. Spakowski credits the Bike Patrol for the arrest noting they're a very valuable and versatile component of the RCMP. |
