The Southern Chiefs' Organization acclaimed Grand Chief Jerry Daniels on Thursday.

There were some government officials in attendance, including Minister of Manitoba Indigenous and Northern Relations Eileen Clarke.

Clarke talks about why these kinds of events matter.

"It's extremely important to have this much one on one time with all the Chiefs in Southern Manitoba. I'm here to acknowledge Grand Chief Jerry Daniels on his re-election by acclamation, which is very exciting."

She says it's key to listen to the issues they have to be able to bring them back and address them to the government.

"To just be here and have the time to not be rushed in a short meeting, but to hear the views and the concerns of all first nations in the southern part of the province. Many are aligned, and many of them are unique to their community."

She adds she enjoys coming out and working alongside the Southern Chiefs' Organization.

"I have been treated so respectfully over the past four years by these very Chiefs, and I share the same respect for them," says Clarke. "I know how hard they work and the challenges that they face, and I'm honoured to be their representative in the government."
