Two local university hockey players are set to make their mark at the Canadian University Women's Hockey Championship starting today. Courtlyn and Sheridan Oswald, sisters from MacGregor, are ready to take to the biggest stage they've ever been on so far.

The sisters play for the University of Manitoba Bisons female hockey team, a team that has advanced through the Canada West Women's Hockey Playoffs to face the best teams in all of Canada at the 2018 U Sports Women's Hockey National Championship. Courtlyn told us how winning a national championship has always been on her mind.

"My first year coming in that's what everyone hoped for but after losing in the finals a couple years the thought diminished a bit. With our team this year, I knew coming in that we were going to be strong and that's definitely what we're all aiming for."

The Oswalds and the Bisons defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies to capture the Canada West Title and come into the tournament ranked as the top seed and are one of the favourites to win it all. They finished the season with a sparkling 22-5-1 record and finished the playoffs 4-1, dropping only the first game of the playoffs and winning through the rest of the way. The Herd advanced to the Canada West Finals when they defeated the Alberta Pandas in quadruple overtime, making it the second-longest game in Canada West history. Courtlyn spoke about what it felt like being in such a tense game.

"It's honestly hard to even talk about now because you're just in the moment at that time. You're not even thinking about how tired you are, you're just looking beside you at everyone and trying to push through and give it all you've got. It was definitely very intense."

The tournament gets underway tomorrow night for the Bisons and the Oswald sisters. They will be matching up against the Queen's Gaels.
