American actress Stella Adler once said "Life beats you down and crushes the soul, and art reminds you that you have one." If you're feeling low, or feeling any way, you can head down to the Portage and District Arts Centre (PDAC) tonight to renew your soul at their first ever open house.

PDAC Executive Director Margaret Bernhardt-Lowdon let's us know what we can expect and why they wanted to open their doors.

"We'll have musicians later on in the day playing," says Bernhardt-Lowdon. "We'll also have really well-known artists from the community, and they're going to show you how they do their art. In particular we'll have Rusty Rutherford, he'll show you how to carve. We also have Gabby Neuschwander, who's going to show you how to do pottery."

Bernhardt-Lowdon says there's also other artists there demonstrating acrylic painting and resin painting. She says it was important for them to reach out to the community to let everyone know what they do. The evening also includes tours of the facility.

Local waterfowl carver Rusty Rutherford has been carving for thirty years and is sharing how he does his work. He says he feels proud to be a part of the evening.

"A lot of Portagers don't realize just how special this place is," says Rutherford. "And how much work goes into demonstrating. They have a committee that does nothing but hang these paintings. It seems like it might be easy but it's not easy, look at how they're all beautiful... But this venue, is world class. And to be able to be displayed here and featured here, is really an honour."

The open house is on until 8:00 p.m. tonight.
