What would have been a normal Monday evening in Koko Platz was anything but earlier this week in Portage la Prairie. Around 9:20 p.m., RCMP received their first call and quickly responded to an assault with a weapon outside a residence on Meighen Avenue.

The victim was a 65-year-old man who was loading up his truck, when a man armed with a crowbar approached him and demanded the vehicle. The suspect struck the victim with the crowbar, stole the truck, and fled.

The victim did not require medical attention.

As officers were en route, multiple calls were received with updates on the stolen truck. The man was driving erratically, which resulted in damage to several properties.

The stolen truck was located by officers a short distance away damaged and abandoned.

As officers were containing the area they received a call of a home invasion on Wilkinson Crescent. A man broke into that home, threatened the homeowner, and attempted to steal his vehicle.

As police were arriving on scene, the suspect was seen in the backyard of the residence and fled on foot and then jumped into Crescent Lake. The assailant swam to the other side where an officer located the suspect hiding. The man was then arrested without incident.
