The Portage Soup Kitchen and Salvation Army received a boost recently from the Country Lane Quilter's Guild.

The Guild donated $500 to each non-profit organization, and President Cathy Pedden explains how they raised the funds.

"The money was raised through our Quilt Show that we hold in November, it's an annual quilt show. We try to move the donations around, we've donated to many groups in the past. I'm a volunteer here at the Soup Kitchen, and I know the need there has really increased over the last while. We assumed the Salvation Army would be in the same kind of situation."

Pedden says they're a big group of people who love helping out in the community.

"We are a group of about 36 members, and we enjoy volunteering and being able to support local charities. We've had a very successful Quilt Show in the last 2 or 3 years, and look forward to having more in the future and being able to donate to different organizations. Last year it was the Habitat For Humanity, and we're always looking for more places to donate quilts, because we like making quilts."

She adds they're always looking for new organizations to donate money, or quilts to.
