The Portage la Prairie Fire Department responded to a call on Sunday, October 24, of a fire taking place at the Somerfield Colony Greenhouse.

The call first came in at 1:22 p.m., according to Captain Todd McKinnon, and he says the last engine left the greenhouse at 10:49 p.m.

He says two fire engines responded to the call, along with additional water haulers, to put out the fire. He adds there were no injuries or fatalities due to the fire.

McKinnon notes the building was approximately 90 feet by 30 feet, and they were able to remove some tractors from the burning greenhouse as well. He mentions there's nothing that would point to foul play being the cause of the fire.

McKinnon would like to stress that if anyone needs to report a fire in progress, they should call 911 immediately.
