The Phillies have two more points to their credit today, following last night's action in the Winnipeg Men's Fastball League.

Portage was faced with a tough test, hosting one of the league's premier clubs in the Landmark Knights. Landmark entered last night's competition with a record of 7-3, good for 14 points and a second place ranking. In a couple of epic battles, as part of a double header, neither club could get the upper hand as both games ended in a 3-all draw.

Phillies pitcher, Gregg Waldvogel, says Portage knew they would have it in tough taking on one of the best teams in the league and facing two strong Landmark pitchers. He adds Portage allowed the Knights to get back into game one when they had them down, but in the second contest it was the other way around. All in all, Waldvogel says he's pleased with the Phillies output last night, adding it bodes well for them heading into Provincials this weekend.

Waldvogel went the distance last night in game two, striking out many would-be Landmark hitters, something one might think would put tremendous strain on the ace's arm; not exactly desirable so close to Provincials. Not to worry, Waldvogel says his arm is in fine condition and when pitching in warm conditions such as last night the wear on the arm is lessened. He adds he pitched in plenty of games last weekend in the Phillies tournament victory in Notre Dame and his arm held up alright, so he should be in good shape for this weekend's play.

Provincials start today and are taking place in Winnipeg at John Blumberg.
