The Manitoba Provincial Plowing Championships wrapped up yesterday in Portage.

Boissevain's Nick Boundy won the junior championship in sod and stubble, while Tom Ryall from Rivers took senior honours.

Boundy is 17, and believes it's important for young people to get involved in the sport. He wants to keep the tradition alive because it's been done for generations.
Tom Ryall agrees the tradition needs to be maintained because it's how the prairies were tamed.

Organizer Allison Briggs calls the event a success, even with bad weather. Because it's a provincial event, cancelling wasn't an option.

The Central Manitoba Plowing Championship awards were also handed out. Spokesperson Paul Trimble feels plowing competitions need to reach a wider audience.
