It was an all-Portage final this afternoon, as Westpark School hosted the Royals Junior Varsity Girls Basketball Tournament.

In the end, PCI Saints and Westpark Royals squared off in the final, with the Saints recording a 29-11 triumph.

Saints' coach Dave McLeod says Westpark presented a challenge for them.

"We've never played against a zone before, and they're playing a zone defence, so right before the game we went over a few game rules for a zone, attacking the gaps. And the girls just caught on real quick -- way faster than I expected them to -- and our defence was just lock-down."

McLeod says this tournament's an opportunity to evaluate the team before regular season play starts.

"It's good to get two games out of the way that really don't mean anything. Obviously, it's nice to win, but they don't mean a whole lot. So now we've been able to see what we have to work on, what we're doing well that maybe we don't have to spend as much time on, and hopefully have a great season."

Westpark coach Brian Brewer is pleased with is team's performance, despite the loss.

"We're a young team, and we got a little bit out-worked there. They put a lot of pressure on us -- we've got to learn how to handle the pressure. We're going to work on our shooting. We missed some shots, but in the second half, we pretty well played them even. We had a little bit of a breakdown in the second quarter, but as far as the first tournament of the year, I'm happy with the girls. We'll keep working on some things, and improve."

It was a four-team event, with Steinbach Regional Secondary School and Prairie Mountain also participating.
