Being "on the clock" is now a thing of the past for the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL).

The MJHL announced on June 22 that the Board of Governors has voted to end the player draft. This will allow prospective MJHL players to choose which team to commit to.

The Board of Governors believes this will also incentivize teams to make their player development programs stronger to draw in more interest from prospective players.

The change will take effect in 2025, meaning the 2009 age group will be the first to take advantage of the new procedure.

If members of the 2023 draft class are unsigned by August 1, 2024, they'll be free to sign with any other team. The same is true for the 2024 draft class, as they'll be free to sign with any team if they're unsigned by August 1, 2025.
