Manitoba RCMP have announced with sadness that a member of their canine family has passed away.

Police Service Dog, Erlo, also known as Earl, began his service with the RCMP in 2015, and retired to live with his handler, Cpl. Matt Estrada in 2022.

He began his great career in the Lower Mainland of BC, before arriving in Manitoba and working in the Selkirk area.

Earl loved tracking, criminal apprehension, was a super star at searching, and was also trained in explosive detection.

RCMP say Earl has too many "saves" to mention, but on one of his first operational tracks in Manitoba, he saved an elderly man with dementia who had gone missing. Earl tracked him in circles for over an hour. The man was eventually located, in the woods, alive.

In retirement, he learned to settle into the living room full time, and while his mobility wasn’t like it used to be, his partner says his mind was still as sharp as ever, and he never lost that desire to work.
