Since 2008, Manitobans have celebrated the 3rd Monday in February as Louis Riel Day, and today PRRA & the Portage Friendship Centre are hosting an activity filled day at the PCU Centre for Louis Riel and Family Day.

Eagles Fire Youth Centre Manager Cornell Pashé says some of the activities taking place throughout the day celebrate the Métis heritage behind Louis Riel.

"There's parts of the day that have sashay making and you see how it was an important part of the Métis culture. The snowshoeing and the dancing were an important part of the culture as well and by having an event day that has those kinds of activities, you celebrate what the day is but also the heritage and the rich tradition and culture."

Pashé comments on why today is important.

"In the end, it's educating...It's important the community, the youth, and the individuals are educated on where they came from and to understand their place in day-to-day life. They need to understand their place in history, whether they're Aboriginal, Métis or whatever, and today is about teaching them that."

Métis activities will run from 10am-1:30pm at the PCU Centre, with many other activities taking place throughout the day.
