The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating a death related to an officer-involved shooting, after a man was located with a gunshot wound in Niverville.

On June 5, the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) notified the IIU of an incident that occurred earlier that same day.

At approximately 12:40 a.m., police officers were notified to look out for a stolen vehicle whose occupants may be in possession of a firearm. Air1 tracked the vehicle to Otterburne near a post-secondary institution, where at approximately 1:50 a.m., the suspect vehicle rammed a WPS vehicle. Officers discharged their firearms at the suspect vehicle, which fled the scene.

Police tracked the vehicle and its occupants to Drovers Run in Niverville, where officers located a male with a gunshot wound. Officers requested an ambulance and provided first aid, but the male was pronounced deceased on-site.

One female is in custody and one male fled the scene.

As this matter involves a fatality, the IIU will request the Manitoba Police Commission appoint a civilian monitor.

Witnesses or individuals who have information or video footage that may assist the investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.

The investigation is ongoing so no further details will be provided at this time.
