The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba is examining an altercation between police and a 27-year-old man ended fatally over the weekend.

On Saturday, April 20, at around 5:00 p.m., Amaranth RCMP responded to a call for assistance from Manitoba First Nation Police Service (MFNPS) and the police of jurisdiction in Sandy Bay First Nation for an ongoing incident in the community.

The call was for a disturbance involving a weapon at a residence.

When RCMP and MFNPS arrived on the scene, the suspect had fled. RCMP and MFNPS officers tracked the suspect.

The 27-year-old man was located in an open outdoor area in Sandy Bay First Nation. He was armed with multiple weapons, according to police.

The encounter between the police and the suspect resulted in an RCMP officer using a firearm and injuring the suspect. Mounties say that despite life-saving measures attempted by officers on the scene, the suspect was pronounced deceased.

No officers were physically injured in the incident.

Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services is currently in the community investigating. The IIU is conducting their own investigation at this time, and as such, the RCMP cannot provide any further information.
