Some Portagers wanting to get out for a skate have gotten the chance to do so in one of the city's nicest rinks.

The Portage Learning and Literacy Centre (PLLC) and Family Resource Centre's (FRC) I Love to Skate program has been moved to Stride Place moving forward. They held their first indoor meeting on February 6th.

Miriam Ghitale, settlement coordinator with the PLLC, says they had begun the program with meets happening on Crescent Lake. She notes that when the cold snap hit, it was decided to move indoors for the rest of the program.

"They get filled up pretty quick because everybody wants to have some rink time," explains Ghitale. "Stride Place was very accommodating and could find us a time."

While the program wasn't designed exclusively for those new to skating, Ghitale says it's been nice to see beginners improve, which usually only takes an hour or two.

"They've been asking about skating other times, so we've been able to show them other places that they can go," notes Ghitale. "Thankfully, there's a lot of places you can go for free, especially in the way the economy is today, so it's nice to have those options."
