In Northern League baseball last night, Winnipeg prevented a Gary sweep and put a stop to their four game losing streak.

Leading the game 3-1 in the bottom of the 9th, the Goldeyes allowed the RailCats to creep back and tie the score to force extra innings. With their luck as of late it looked as though the losing trend might continue but in the 10th, Jimmy Hurst led off the inning with a double to left center. Harry Berrios then advanced the power hitter to third off a bunt single and David Gates brought home the tie-breaking run with a sacrifice fly to center. From there the defence did the rest in the bottom half preserving the 4-3 win.

Goldeyes Coach, Steve Maddock, says last night's win was a must have because even with Fargo-Moorhead wrapping up the first half West Division title, every game is important and could come into play if the Fish are in a battle for the second half title or even a wild card playoff spot. Further to that, he feels the Goldeyes played a good game last night and is equally impressed with Winnipeg's resiliency; adding that was illustrated particularly in the hitting of Hurst, Gates and Matt Mann.

Maddock points out that the club has battled hard for the past three days and are exhausted. Unfortunately, for the Fish they won't have much down time as they travel to Fargo to take on the Red Hawks this evening.
