Six local indigenous youth are going to get the opportunity of a lifetime.

The Eagles Wings Flight School will be hosting a class for at-risk youth to find their passion while experiencing something different.

Board Chair Josh Cordery says the program has been a long time in the making.

"This is our very first year in operation. For a while, we weren't sure if we were going able to do it because as everyone is aware COVID has changed our reality. Now with where Manitoba is at with our safe re-opening plan, with the measures that we have in place, and we are going to continue to take to make sure everyone safe. We can do this safely, which is exciting for us."

The program has been a dream for Cordery for quite some time. The non-profit board has six members and a whole bunch of community sponsors to make this happen.

Cordery explains why he put the school into action.

"To provide an opportunity for young people to build self-confidence, to gain an introduction into aviation to a sector that in a while anyway, will be back up and running I'm certain. So, they can start to dream really big dreams and are 100 per cent capable of going after and achieving those dreams."

The camp will start with three days of in-class training so kids can learn the basics about flying. Students will also hear from a guest speaker who works at Perimiter Aviation.

Cordery says they'll also get some in-plane opportunities.

"They'll get takeoffs, landings, and upper air work. We'll do a small local cross country because we don't go very fast in the machine. The youth will be involved in planning a route, and then we'll fly that route. That'll be a neat experience."

The students will be flying in an Allegro 2000 advanced ultralight aircraft, which is a small basic low-speed aircraft.
