One of Portage la Prairie's funds to help the city will be going by a new name.

Councillor Joe Masi says the fund, originally known as the Gas Tax, will now be called the Canada Community Building Reserve Fund. He says the money they get from this fund has been going toward infrastructure in the community and will continue to stay that way despite the name change.

"It comes almost unconditionally to municipalities to use for infrastructure as they see fit," explains Masi. "The money has been coming for a number of years now. We're now just changing the name to match what the federal government is calling it."

Masi adds the causeway project was one of the more recent projects to utilize the fund.

"Every year, there's a province-wide formula on a per capita basis," mentions Masi. "Portage la Prairie gets an allocation based on our population. We don't apply for it."

He notes, they've been receiving money through this fund for the past 17 years.

The next City Council meeting will take place on Monday, January 23rd.
