There aren't as many farmers in the general population as there once was, but food's just as important as ever. Farm production extension specialist Shawn Cabak provides some ag awareness he says feels everyone should know.

Shawn Cabak"I guess we've seen a steady decline in number of farmers that are on the landscape, so that now our farm population is only about 5% of the general population. Consumers are less connected to agriculture, but they still want to know where their food comes from. That makes ag awareness important."

Cabak shares some facts about how little farmers actually benefit from a lot of products.

"In a bushel of barley, one bushel will produce 333 bottles of beer. The value of that barley in a bottle of beer is just over one cent -- very little take-home for the farmer that's in that final price of that bottle of beer."

He adds, "One bushel of wheat will make approximately 100 loaves of bread. And when you look at the farm value of the what in that bread, the farmer only gets about six cents."

Cabak says, "I guess it's important for consumers to know where their food comes from, and also to know to value of the raw commodity is often very little in final take-home price of that product they're buying in the grocery store."
