Have you noticed the construction going on at the Sobey's parking lot in Portage?

It's going to be one of six Tesla superchargers in this province.

Portage Chamber of Commerce President Guy Moffatt calls it exciting for the city to have been chosen as a site for a charging station.

"Because it's going to for traffic to come through," he says. "The really lucky thing is our geographic location, and it matches up with the amount of life that's in the battery. So when people are travelling across the country, they're going to be stopping in Portage la Prairie, which is a really, really great thing for our businesses and retailers."

Moffatt thinks the supercharger will help showcase the city, especially with the increase in industry here.

"Which is going to bring an increase in people, which is going to bring an increase in retail," he says. "It's just going to be more opportunity for these people who are going to be stopping to charge their vehicles, to spend some time in Portage, and look around our shops. And hopefully, we can direct them down to the island so they can a really good picture of the beauty that's in Portage la Prairie."

Moffatt realizes the arrival of the charging station isn't connected with the large industrial investment that's on the horizon.

"This one is pure luck," he says, "Whereas the introduction of other industry has been because we have been promoting. But I believe this is just another really great asset to be in the forefront of eco-friendly cars."
