The RM of St. Laurent's excited about Canada Day this year as it celebrates the nation's 150th birthday. Reeve Cheryl Smith says Canadian citizenship means a lot to Métis people.

"We see it as an opportunity to really bring the whole municipality together to recognize Canada's 150th birthday. Our community, as a lot of people know, is the largest Métis community in Canada," explains Smith. "We still have our language, our culture, and our tradition. We recognize Louis Riel and the profound impact he had negotiating Manitoba into Confederation. Being part of Canada means a lot to the Métis people."

She says they're planning a heritage baseball game with two of their well-known teams that played throughout the Interlake region as far back as the 1950's, along with some original members. Smith adds they want to incorporate the families of the players into the game by having some of the grandchildren run the bases for the elderly players.
