The Rural Municipality of Victoria may soon be getting an egg grading facility, the only one of its kind in the province.

Reeve Harold Purkess explains they've been approached by a group from Cypress River about building an egg grading station which will allow producers with less than 300 chickens to have their eggs graded and sorted, permitting them to sell their eggs to a larger market.

"Right now, if you had a small flock of chickens you can basically only sell them out of your yard. This would allow the producer to take them to restaurants or hotels or farmers' markets. It's really going to address the speciality, the niche markets, for organic and pasture-raised produce."

Purkess comments on the timetable for the project.

"They're hoping to have this thing up and running by fall. Of course, they have a lot of CFI, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, rules that they have to follow in their set-up and in their equipment. They're looking to build it in Cypress River in the same location where the meat market was that burned down a couple years ago."

He explains this will be a positive thing for the region, as it will not only create employment, but will also give people who would like to raise a few chickens or laying hens the opportunity to do so.
