Westpark School's JV basketball teams were in action last night.

The junior varsity girls were trumped by the GVC Zodiacs 75-36 in Zone 4 exhibition play at Westpark. The Royals seemed outmatched at both ends of the court, but grade 10 player Jada Wieler wasn't disappointed with her teams performance.

"I think our team did very well, we did really good offense -- and defense -- but that was a tough team and we played the best we could. We did really good and our attitudes were great. Really proud of us."

Wieler recently won the Manitoba High School Athletic Associations Athlete of the Week for her performance last week. She says it was a pretty exciting moment when she found out.

"Yes, I was pretty crazy. I was screaming! It was pretty exciting and I couldn't have done it without my team."

The Royals JV girls have one more exhibition match set for next Wednesday, when they visit Carman.

The JV boy's didn't fare so well against GVC either, as they fell 83-22 in exhibition action as well. Royals' grade 10 player Carter Friesen says they can take a lot away from last night.

"We played well and passed the ball well. We made a few mistakes, but we learn from that and we're on it. We play, we have a great group of guys and we mold pretty well together so we'll improve for the next game."

The Royals JV boys' first regular season match is Monday.
