Registration for the 2016 Portage Pitbulls' football season starts today.

Portage Pitbulls' Coaches Liaison Mike Robinson says they'll be holding their in-person registration from 7-9 p.m. at the PCU Centre today, tomorrow, and Friday. Robinson says players won't hit the field for over a month though.

"We do a small camp in June, just on Sundays, to get the kids out there and used to the helmets again. We start practices in mid-July, and the season starts the first weekend after August long."

12-Year-old Peewee Pitbull Laurence Houde's been playing for a few years now. He's been trying to get as many people as he can to sign up this year.

"I think that (kids) should go and try to see how they like it. We're trying to encourage a lot of kids to play this year. So we can have a bigger team, and we want a lot of kids to get active."

Houde explains how the first practice of the year usually goes.

"Everyone goes for 1 practice. They have 4 corners where they get you to do things like running and stuff. How to do a proper stance for some positions."

Robinson's in his first year as a board member, and says it's exciting to watch the kids over the season.

"I love football as a whole, so to be out there and to be able to help the kids grow in their athleticism in the sport -- as well as just to see them have fun and learn -- and work together as a team. It's exciting to see."

He adds it's all about developing the kids on the field, and off.

"The major things are teamwork, a little bit in the athleticism, the friendships that come out of it. A lot of the times I know kids are stuck with the friends in their school and don't get out other than that."
