The Portage Phillies are champions of their home fastpitch tournament they held over the weekend.

The Phillies took out the Mallard Stars 5-1 in the championship game, after defeating Notre Dame in the semi-final earlier in the day. Phillies' Pitcher Tanner Waldvogel says it was great to get some wins in front of their fans.

"It was nice to get to play back at home. We didn't play here all year, so it was nice to play at home, and nice to win our own tournament."

Waldvogel lists a few things that were working for them in the final.

"We got a few runs early, unlike the rest of the tournament where we kind of waited until the 5th or 6th inning before we'd score. So we got on their pitcher early and just kept on him, and it worked out well. The defense was good."

The Stars were undefeated through the round robin and earned a bye to the finals. Waldvogel says nothing came easy this weekend.

"Yeah, it was pretty good. I mean every team could put up runs, and there was some good pitching. It wasn't easy, but we managed to get it done in the end."

Second place went to Mallard, while Notre Dame was 3rd.
