The Portage Islanders squeaked out a 5-4 win over the Carman Beavers last night in the South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League.

The Islanders jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first, as Tanner Blight and Tanner Waldvogel each netted a goal.

The Beavers were able to tie things up halfway through the second, and both teams exchanged goals to end the period. Waldvogel picked up his second of the night for the Islanders.

The Beavers struck first in the 3rd, scoring 8 minutes in. Islanders' Stan Yanchisyn was able to tie the game at 4 just a few minutes later, and with just over a minute to go in the game, added his second of the night for the win.

Islanders' GM Jeremy Brooks talks about Yanchisyn's play on the night.

"He played really good. He was really good on the draws too, and we were very short-staffed. We only had 13 guys."

Brooks says there were some scary moments, but they pulled out an exciting victory.

"It was really exciting actually. Tanner Blight had scored a goal about 5 minutes earlier than that (the game winner), and the goal got called back. After that, they scored to tie the game, so it was a little bit uneasy and everyone was a little bit nervous. But we came out and Stan Yanchisyn netted one."

The Islanders' next match is Thursday night in Morden.
