The Portage Islanders season is over following a 7-3 loss at the PCU Centre to Carman in game 6 of the South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League semi finals.

Carman took the lead early in the game, scoring 3 goals before the 10 minute mark in the 1st period. The Islanders were able to shut down Carman for the rest of the period, but found themselves down 3-0 after 1.

The 2nd period started better for Portage, with Stan Yanchishyn scoring 2:39 into the frame off a feed from Landon Thomson. Carman didn't take long to answer back, with another 3 goal outburst in under 5 minutes to take a commanding 6-1 lead into the dressing room.

The Islanders came out hard in the 3rd period which led to Carman taking a penalty in the first 4 minutes. AJ Spiller was able to capitalize on the powerplay for Portage to make it 6-2. Just over 5 minutes later, Portage scored another powerplay goal, when Anders Strome redirected a shot from Tanner Waldvogal to make the score 6-3 for Carman. 2 late penalties for Portage gave the Beavers a 5-on-3 powerplay, which they scored on to make the game 7-3.

Islanders' captain Anders Strome comments on the game.

"We kind of put ourselves in a bit of a hole early and you can't do that when you're facing elimination in the playoffs. It didn't go our way tonight but at least the boys didn't give up."

Strome talks about the success of the team in their first season.

"I would say it was successful. The guys in the room and I feel we had the team to go all the way, but we've got to take the positives out of it. We had a great group of guys and hopefully a lot of them are back next year, with maybe a few new faces as well. We had a lot of support from the fans and the town and surrounding area so we appreciate that. We're looking forward to getting back out next year."
